TransCode Therapeutics Announces Breakthrough in GBM Treatment

BOSTON, Oct. 26, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a groundbreaking development, TransCode Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: RNAZ), a pioneer in RNA oncology, has unveiled a potential game-changer in the battle against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The company's lead therapeutic candidate, TTX-MC138, has demonstrated remarkable success in preclinical studies, offering newfound hope for patients battling this aggressive brain tumor.

GBM is a devastating disease with a high mortality rate, making any progress in its treatment a significant breakthrough. In a study led by Dr. Anna Moore of Michigan State University, TTX-MC138 was administered to mice with human GBM tumors as an alternative to the current standard-of-care chemotherapy, temozolomide (TMZ). TMZ resistance is a widespread problem in GBM treatment, contributing to its dismal survival rates.

The results are nothing short of remarkable. Mice treated with TTX-MC138 not only survived longer but also showed a remarkable increase in survival rates compared to the control group. At the 50-day mark after treatment initiation, an astonishing 75% of mice treated with TTX-MC138 were still alive, while only 25% of the control group had survived.

TransCode's Chief Technology Officer, Zdravka Medarova, PhD, emphasized the potential of TTX-MC138 to revolutionize GBM treatment, especially in cases where resistance to standard chemotherapy has developed.

TTX-MC138 is a unique therapy consisting of an iron oxide nanocarrier linked to a nucleic acid designed to inhibit microRNA-10b, a critical regulator of cancer progression in various advanced solid tumors, including GBM. The success of TTX-MC138 extends beyond GBM, with promising results in mouse models of pancreatic and breast cancer. Even in spontaneous feline mammary carcinoma, the therapy demonstrated efficacy.

Michael Dudley, Chief Executive Officer of TransCode, highlighted the significance of this breakthrough, stating, "Given the lethal nature of GBM, adding a therapeutic such as TTX-MC138 to the arsenal available to oncologists could potentially have a high impact on the future of GBM treatment."

TransCode has initiated a first-in-human clinical trial with TTX-MC138 for advanced solid cancers, aiming to quantify the therapy's delivery to metastatic lesions and assess its pharmacokinetics in cancer patients. Although this trial is not intended for therapeutic purposes, it holds promise for future clinical trials.

TransCode Therapeutics is on a mission to harness the potential of RNA therapeutics in the fight against cancer. With a portfolio of drug candidates targeting various tumor types, including breast, pancreatic, ovarian, colon, and glioblastomas, TransCode is at the forefront of innovative cancer treatments.
